The Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Leadership School (MJNLS) is named after Julius Nyerere, the Father of the Nation of the United Republic of Tanzania, in recognition of his significant contribution to national liberation movements in Southern Africa. These movements include the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa, the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO) of Mozambique, the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) of Angola, the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) of Namibia, the Zimbabwe African National Union–Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) of Zimbabwe, and Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) of Tanzania.
The school is modern complex with well-resourced and high quality facilities that support learning and provision of relevant education suited for today’s environment. The school is located in Kibaha District, Pwani Region, Tanzania. Construction of the school began in 2018 and was completed and officially inaugurated in 2022. The school occupies an area of approximately 10 hectares. It comprises of an administration building, dormitories, and dining facilities. The dormitory buildings have the capacity to accommodate up to 210 participants at one time. In addition, there are conference rooms of varying sizes, with capacities of up to 300 people, 50 people, and 10 people.
The School’s motto is, ‘Leadership for Inclusivity and Impact’, reflects our commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment and our dedication to nurturing prospective leaders who will positively impact their communities.
Since its inception, the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Leadership School (MJNLS) has successfully hosted a wide array of leadership training programs, established partnerships with international institutions, and developed a comprehensive curriculum designed to address Africa’s most urgent challenges. Between February 2023 and June 2024, the School delivered 45 programs, including 9 workshops tailored specifically for the Six Sister Parties and 36 custom-designed, demand-driven courses for government, public, and private institutions. These programs collectively trained 6,329 participants, surpassing initial expectations. MJNLS has also hosted numerous high-level conferences, attracting distinguished dignitaries and international visitors from various sectors. These events have provided a platform for impactful discussions on leadership, governance, and socio-economic development, further enhancing the School's reputation as a leading institution for leadership training in Africa.
To train a cadre of leadership aware and conscious of the importance and need of Pan African Unity and Solidarity, and a Pan African approach to development.
To train a new generation of leaders who are conscious of the historic links amongest their countries and will work towards enhancing and strengthening such links for cooperation and solidarity.
To train leaders able to understand, appreciate, defend historical contribution of Africa to human development.
To create a cadre of leaders who understand Africa’s place and role in world economies and politics as it has evolved historically.
To impart competencies of vision and foresightedness leadership; and skills in governance, communication and mass mobilization, negotiation and mediation, and emotional intelligence
To transform trainees into better persons and patriotic leaders but also sharpen their broad understanding and analysis of historical and current issues, both national and international, so that they can ably confront realities of the time without departing from the fundamental principles and ideologies of their Parties.
The School is registered as a charitable trust under the laws of the United Republic of Tanzania and its activities are carried out exclusively for charitable, educational, and research purposes.
